Evidence of time
Evidence of Time is an ongoing visual journal that began in 2021, following a pivotal life transition. After retiring from a career in studio photography and leaving the city life of Chicago, Kauck relocated part-time to the serene coastal town of Rockport, Maine.
What started as daily walks quickly evolved into enriching 'sensory gathering' exercises—practices inspired by Kauck's early art school training. Sensory gathering involves fully immersing oneself in the sounds, smells, tastes, textures and sights of the immediate environment. Yet, what truly fascinated him was the subtle and profound evidence of time itself.
Tidal shifts, changing seasons, growth cycles, and shifting atmospheric moods all became markers of time’s passage, unfolding in ways both fleeting and eternal. The camera, with its unique ability to compress or expand moments, revealed dimensions of time invisible to the human eye. This discovery sparked an endless well of inspiration.
Kauck’s aspiration is to create photographs that transcend the visual surface and evoke a deeper connection. He invites the viewers to feel the emotion embedded within the images—rather than fixating on what the subject may be.
